I will probably be moving to either Baltimore or Philadelphia in the late summer or fall for school. Does anyone know anything about bike commuting in these cities? If so let me know I’d like to hear what you have to say.

I would check with the messengers in that city, also there are all sorts of web pages out there about that. Check with the LBS’s and also what I do is look at google maps alot. You can learn alot from just looking for new routs, checking the traffic from the still photo;s and stuff like that.
It will also come down to how close you want to live to where you will be riding the most, and everything else will kinda fall into place. you will find placed to eat and buy food close, and things of that nature.
What I did wrong when I moved to arkansas, was not come here first for a visit, and really check things out. That is one of the best ways.
One more thing, join a bike forum there in that city too and ask all these questions… before you do that make a search and then ask the unanswered questions! good luck in school and the riding!!!!
Thanks Squid, for your advice. Where do you live in Arkansas? My dad lives in Little Rock
Hot Springs, I just realized too that you live in Atlanta too, so something to add is you are going to run into different weather than Atlanta, like cold snowy conditions that make biking interesting. So thats something you might want to think about, like taking the bus in the winter to be on the safe side, and things of that nature.
well good luck chat soon
I think Baltimore is a pretty good city to bike in, and it seems to be getting better. I’ve lived here my whole life, I enjoy this city alot. If you have any questions I’d be happy to answer.

Thanks Dave. I will definitely keep you in mind as I get closer to deciding where I want to go and I will keep you posted if I move to Baltimore
I live in the Germantown section of Philadelphia and commute by bike to Center City every day. I think Philly cycling scene is very diverse and robust – and getting better.
The good:
Many urban, track, road and mountain options in and very close to the city
Strong bicycle non-profits like the Greater Philadelphia Cycling Association, Urban Bike Project, etc.
Many miles of bike lanes, bike paths and integration with mass transit
Excellent bike shops and local frame builders
Pro-cycling mayor and newly appointed city bike czar.
The bad:
Philadelphia drivers and their well deserved reputations
Can’t take bikes on trains during rush hour
Poor street conditions
I like Baltimore too but I’d give the nod to Philly. That’s my $0.02.
I agree with Eric. I’ve lived in Philadelphia and environs for close to 20 years now so I’m a bit biased, but it’s got to be one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country. It certainly has a lot of cyclists and I’d say that the more cyclists there are, the more aware and accommodating motorists are going to be. That was my observation moving from city to suburbs. There are always going to be exceptions, but…
move to philly, it is so much better then chram city
